GENERAL PRACTITIONERS FROM THE UK
There are 2 relevant Pathways to Registration in Australia:
- Specialist Pathway (SPP)
- Competent Authority Pathway (CAP)
SPECIALIST PATHWAY (SPP)
The RACGP have 2 Categories for GPs from the UK.
CATEGORY 1
The Specialist Assessment Pathway (Fully Comparable / Area of Need) is for IMGs with following qualifications from the UK. Either of these 2 qualifications provides a pathway to Fellowship ad eundum gradum (Faeg) of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP).
Membership of the Royal College of General Practitioners (MRCGP) who also hold the Joint Committee Postgraduate Training for General Practitioners (JCPTGP)
OR
MRCGP member who also hold Postgraduate Medical Education and Training Board qualification (PMETB)
Deemed ‘fully comparable’ GPs from the UK with either of the above qualifications are able to apply for Fellowship and practice in Australia unsupervised.
CATEGORY 2
GPs who hold either of these 2 qualifications/memberships are considered Category 2 doctors:
Membership of the Royal College of General Practitioner UK (MRCGP)
Certificate of the Joint Committee on Postgraduate Training for General Practice (JCPTGP)
Deemed ‘partially comparable’ GPs who hold the above qualifications are required to undertake the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners Fellowship exam. They have 2 years in which to successfully complete the exam.
COMPETENT AUTHORITY PATHWAY
This pathway applies to medical practitioners who are in the following 2 Categories.
International Medical Graduates (IMGs) on the Competent Authority Pathway (CAP) applying for supervised hospital based or general practice positions who have completed training or assessment through the Australian Medical Council (AMC) designated and approved Competent Authorities are eligible to apply to the AMC for ‘advanced standing’ toward the AMC certificate.
If the AMC grants advanced standing status to the individual IMG, the IMG is not required to sit the AMC Multiple Choice Questionnaire or the AMC Clinical examinations, but is required to undertake a period of workplace based performance assessment with an AMC accredited provider while working under supervision.
CATEGORY A
Successful completion of the Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board (PLAB) test since 1975 and;
Successful completion of Foundation Year 1 or 12 months supervised training (Internship equivalent) approved by the General Medical Council (GMC) in the UK or another designated Competent Authority country.
CATEGORY B
Graduate of a medical course conducted by a medical school in the UK accredited by the GMC in the UK or another designated Competent Authority country.
Successful completion of Foundation Year 1 or 12 months supervised training (Internship equivalent) approved by the General Medical Council (GMC) in the UK or another designated Competent Authority country.
Via the CAP, Limited Registration categories that medical practitioners can apply for are:
General Practice – Limited Registration for Area of Need (AON) if working in General Practice.
Specialist Position – Limited Registration for AON – if working in a specialist role
Hospital Based Position – Limited Registration for postgraduate training or supervised practice.
