GENERAL PRACTITIONERS FROM IRELAND

There are 2 relevant Pathways to Registration in Australia:

  1. Specialist Pathway (SPP)
  2. Competent Authority Pathway (CAP)

SPECIALIST PATHWAY

The RACGP have 1 Category for GPs from Ireland.

CATEGORY 1

The Specialist Assessment Pathway (Fully Comparable / Area of Need) is for IMGs with following qualifications from Ireland. This qualification provides a pathway to Fellowship ad eundum gradum (Faeg) of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP).

Graduate of Irish College of General Practitioners (ICGP) who also hold MICGP membership.

Deemed 'fully comparable' GPs with this qualification are able to apply for Fellowship and practice in Australia unsupervised.

It remains a requirement for GPs to work in a 'District of Workforce Shortage' (DWS). Australian Healthcare Recruitment has many clients seeking General Practitioners who are in a DWS.

COMPETENT AUTHORITY PATHWAY

International Medical Graduates (IMGs) on the Competent Authority Pathway (CAP) applying for supervised hospital based or general practice positions who have completed training or assessment through the Australian Medical Council (AMC) designated and approved Competent Authorities are eligible to apply to the AMC for 'advanced standing' toward the AMC certificate.

If the AMC grants advanced standing status to the individual IMG, the IMG is not required to sit the AMC Multiple Choice Questionnaire or the AMC Clinical examinations, but is required to undertake a period of workplace based performance assessment with an AMC accredited provider while working under supervision.

The following criteria apply:

Graduate of a Medical School in Ireland accredited by the Medical Council of Ireland

And

Successful completion of an internship in Ireland (certificate of experience) or in another Competent Authority country approved by Medical Council of Ireland.

Via the CAP, Limited Registration categories that medical practitioners can apply for are:

General Practice – Limited Registration for Area of Need (AON) if working in General Practice.

Specialist Position – Limited Registration for AON – if working in a specialist role

Hospital Based Position – Limited Registration for postgraduate training or supervised practice.
