MEDICARE

Medicare is Australia's health insurance scheme that makes healthcare affordable for all Australians.

HOSPITALS

PUBLIC HOSPITALS

It provides free treatment as a patient in a public hospital. Australia's public hospital system is jointly funded by the Australian Government and State and Territory Governments.

People admitted to public hospitals as public patients receive treatment by doctors and specialists nominated by the hospital. They are not charged for care and treatment or after-care by the treating doctor.

PRIVATE HOSPITALS

If a patient chooses to be treated in a Private or Public Hospital, Medicare covers 75% of the Medicare Benefits Scheme (MBS) for associated medical costs. The remaining costs will be charged to the patient.

GENERAL PRACTICTIONERS

Medicare reimburses 100% of the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS)

GPs who bill Medicare directly (bulk billing) require the patient to pay nothing. Some practices charge above the MBS and the gap becomes the responsibility of the patient.

SPECIALISTS

Medicare reimburses 85% of the MBS fee for a Specialist. The patient is responsible for the remaining costs.
