Have you ever thought about working in Australia as a General Practitioner or a Medical Practitioner, in either the public or private hospital system? Then please read on!
Life for an OTD in Australia will not only ensure your professional development but a better life for the entire family. Community involvement and family integration are of paramount importance to the community.
There are many pathways to Medical Registration in Australia for OTDs.
General Registration
General Registration is for those who have completed a medical degree and an approved internship in Australia and New Zealand. For those who qualified outside of Australia or New Zealand, additional requirements are necessary to demonstrate equivalence to Australian Standards.

Specialist Registration
Specialist Registration is available to medical practitioners who have been assessed by the specialist medical college as being eligible for fellowship.

Provisional Registration
IMGs who obtain their AMC certificate are eligible to apply for provisional registration to enable them to undertake a 12-month period of supervised practice, necessary for them to be eligible for general registration.
Ideally, IMGs with provisional registration would benefit from 12-months supervised training in an approved intern position. However, the Board recognises that approved intern positions are limited. As an alternative, the Board requires that provisional registrants (IMGs) undertake a 12-month period of supervised training that is made up of:
- Medicine for at least 10 weeks
- Surgery for at least 10 weeks
- Emergency medicine for at least 8 weeks
- A range of other positions to make up 12 months (minimum of 47 weeks full time service).

Limited Registration
Limited Registration is for medical practitioners whose medical qualifications are from a medical school outside of Australia or New Zealand.
Limited Registration types are :
Non-practising Registration
This type of registration may be suitable for medical practitioners who:
- have retired completely from medical practice,
- are not practising temporarily (for example, on maternity or paternity leave) or
- who are not practising in Australia but are practising overseas
